Thanks
Before I talk about anything I would like to thank all of the amazing
people that have given me support throughout the last four years of
my carving career!  You have helped me grow to become the artist I
am today.  You have given me the confidence to compete, attend
shows, and make a real go as a full time bird carver.  Without you, I
would not be able to do what I love to do, every day of my life!
THANK YOU ALL!!!!!
A few words on the updated
site
A long overdue make-over is in progress here at
SongbirdsInWood.com.  I am very excited about the new changes I
will be adding to the site.  Along with new birds I am also working on
a how to/carving process area designed to help my fellow carvers
and to give everybody an idea of the work that goes into each bird.
The amount of time I devote to this section will depend on the
feedback I get on it, so if you like it let me know.

My Goal as an artist is to inspire a love for nature, create an
awareness of our surroundings, and promote preservation of our
natural environment.  My wood carvings are designed to replicate
the complex beauty of life itself.  Art is a medium for bringing people
closer to understanding and appreciating the delicate creations and
balance around us.
How I do what I
do
The first step in my carving process is to create a pattern.  The
pattern is then transferred onto a piece of wood and cut out using a
bandsaw.  I prefer Tupelo Gum, a soft, lightly grained wood, that
holds detail very well.  Next, the bird is carved using a high-speed
rotary tool.  The detail is then burned in using a razor sharp burning
pen, burning up to 50-100 lines per inch of feather.  High quality
glass eyes are then set into place and the eye lids are formed using
a two part epoxy putty.  After sealing the caring with lacquer, the bird
is painted with several translucent washes of acrylic paint to give a
soft, warm, natural appearance.  The feet and legs are crafted from
brass, steel, and epoxy putty.  The base for each piece, if not
natural, is created from a variety of material such as Tupelo, brass
tubes, and rods, copper sheet, epoxy putty, resin, and steel.
Leaves, grass, stones, berries, flowers, fence posts, branches,
snow, vine, and barbed wire, are examples of environment I create
with the listed materials.  All designs are original and one of a kind.
